The Senior Kindergarten program is a full-day program for 5-year olds, five days per week, from September through June. A high-quality academic learning program, the curriculum includes mathematics, literacy, music, French, science, history, geography, art, physical education, and social skills presented in a play-based, hands-on educational environment.
Senior Kindergarten is a crucial year to build a strong foundation for academic success. Social and emotional development also begins to take root at this age. Much of this learning happens through play, with intervention and guidance by teachers. Connections to literature and the teacher’s awareness to ‘teachable’ moments, encourages children to communicate needs and feelings verbally. By the end of the kindergarten year, students will be able to play independently and in small groups, conversing and playing with other students using language that promotes respect and tolerance.
To be eligible for Senior Kindergarten, a child must turn 5 by December 31st. *note: Children who turn 5 years old before the start of school will be considered for Touchstone’s Senior Kindergarten, while those who turn 5 before December 31st of the school year will have the choice of Junior or Senior Kindergarten.
The daily schedule is very flexible, allowing for student interests to be pursued longer (or shorter) if necessary. The teacher supervises center time, but also guides students in games and small group activities. Developing early literacy skills is a very important component of our kindergarten curriculum and is, therefore, integrated in every subject throughout the day.
